Mom Drove Drunk With Young Kids in Car, Crashed Into Tree: Cops

A 39-year-old Long Island woman has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk with her two young children in the car, police say.

Suffolk County police say Laquita Brooks was arrested after losing control of the car and striking a signpost and then a tree Thursday night in Huntington.

Police say her 5-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were seated in the rear and didn't have proper child restraints. The girl suffered a serious head injury and her brother sustained a minor head injury.

The mother wasn't seriously hurt.

Brooks was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years or younger, a felony under Leandra's Law, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Information on Brooks' lawyer wasn't immediately available.
