The mother of an Indiana University student from Westchester missing for more than a year says her family is awaiting word on whether a skull found in the White River in Indianapolis belongs to her daughter.
Charlene Spierer says in a letter posted on a blog dedicated to the search for Lauren Spierer that it could be eight weeks before they know results of testing on the skull found July 8 by a fisherman.
"That’s 80,640 minutes of agony," Spierer wrote in the open letter addressed to whoever knows what happened to her daughter. "We are waiting to find out if a skull found in the White River might be Lauren’s. It’s chilling to say the words. I find it incomprehensible that if by chance you are reading this, you know the answer already."
Divers searched but found no additional remains.
Lauren Spierer disappeared June 3, 2011, after a night of partying with friends in Bloomington. Volunteers combed the city and surrounding areas looking for the 20-year-old apparel merchandising student from Greenburgh, N.Y.
Her mother says in Thursday's post that Lauren's dental records and DNA are on file with federal authorities.
