Crews searched fruitlessly for hours for a kayaker who disappeared in Lake Ronkonkoma Thursday afternoon before suspending their search as darkness set in, officials said.
Authorities resumed searching Friday morning for the man who disappeared in the Long Island lake about 3:30 p.m. the day before, according to the Lakeland Fire Department.
Witnesses reported seeing the man yelling for help before he slipped under the water.
Suffolk County police were called to the scene, and dive teams and officers in boats spent about five hours looking for the man. They called off the search at about 8:30 p.m.
