Broken Screening Machines at JFK Airport Lead to Huge Security Lines

Several scanning machines are down at John F. Kennedy International Airport, leading to delays as panicked travelers wondered if they'd make their flights Thursday afternoon.

A Port Authority of New York & New Jersey spokesman said three of the eight Transportation Security Administration X-ray machines were down in Terminal 4. He says there are some screening delays because of the problem and there isn't a huge back-up because of the issue -- but people on Twitter were complaining of large crowds.

Regina Rosas tweeted a photo showing longer than usual lines leading to the security checkpoints: "Terminal 4 at JFK security checkpoints DOWN. I need to make my flights... what can we do about it???"

"TSA agents say never happened before. 90 mins wait. Awesome," Matthew Monks tweeted

The TSA says it will update when the issue is resolved.

Incidentally, also at Kennedy Airport, a fire training exercise was going on in which controlled smoke and fire was being produced away from public areas, according to officials. There is no threat to the public.
