An attacker came from behind, punched a woman repeatedly in the head and tried to rape her early Sunday, but she managed to fight him off, police said.

She sought help from a passing motorist and the attacker fled with her purse, the NYPD said.

The 35-year-old woman was near 74th Street and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights when the man approached from behind, pulled her backward and punched her head, police said.

The woman fell down and the man dragged her to a fence where he tried to rape her, but she fought him off, police said.

The woman suffered bruises and cuts to her head and body, police said. She was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital in stable condition.

The suspect is in his early 30s, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and wearing a white jacket, green shirt, black shoes and light colored pants, police said.
