It's “Gloria Gaynor Day” in Jersey

Essex County honors disco diva

Essex County is honoring a Newark native whose disco hit could become the theme song for those who survive the economic meltdown.

Singer Gloria Gaynor is best known for her 1979 hit, "I Will Survive."

The disco diva's first hit was "Never Can Say Goodbye" in 1974.

Officials gathered at the county Hall of Records to proclaim "Gloria Gaynor Day."

She's scheduled to return to the county to perform at the New Jersey performing Arts Center this winter.
