An Iona College student was shot and killed at a park in New Rochelle early Sunday, authorities say.
Brandon Lawrence, 18, was found shot to death in Lincoln Park, about 3/4 a mile away from the Iona campus, according to police.
Officers responded to the scene after getting reports of gunshots at the park, and paramedics pronounced Lawrence, of Yonkers, dead at the scene.
Iona staid in a statment that it was "deeply saddened" by Lawrence's death.
"The Iona community is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of an Iona student resulting from a shooting early Sunday morning at a New Rochelle city park," the college said in a statement. "The College is coordinating support services directly with students, faculty and staff and has been advised there is no related danger to the campus community.”
Authorities on Monday said that Stivenson Desir, 19, of New Rochelle, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case.
Attorney information for Desir wasn't immediately available.
