The man charged with raping a 21-year-old woman in Hudson River Park last month says he can't remember if he committed any crime because he blacked out from drinking too many Four Lokos.
Convicted sex offender Jonathan Stewart told detectives he consumed five of the alcohol-laced energy drinks and passed out, waking up only when he was in police custody, according to the Daily News.
Stewart, who is homeless, was indicted Tuesday on rape and assault charges in connection with the Sept. 22 incident in the park. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
According to police, the victim was sitting on a bench inside the park, talking on her cell phone when at about 5 a.m. when the defendant approached her. Police said he hit the woman, attempted to strangle her and dragged her into some bushes where he sexually assaulted her.
The woman was eventually able to break free and fled her attacker, police said. She found a police officer and gave a description of Stewart, who was arrested soon after, based on her description.
Stewart told detectives he had been drinking with his cousin on the Lower East Side and had considered ending his life because he'd "been through so much," reports the Daily News.
"I drank five Four Lokos, Grey Goose vodka, smoked marijuana and K2," the paper reports Stewart told officers. "I was going toward the Brooklyn Bridge and was going to jump off the bridge."
At his indictment Tuesday, prosecutor Alyssa Gunther said the district attorney's office would not accept any less than 40 years in prison for Stewart. Stewart, a top-level sex offender, has already served at least five years for two previous sexual assaults.
