Although the tri-state is no longer suffering from sweltering temperatures, rain is expected in the area on Saturday and Sunday.
There is a chance for periods of showers and thunderstorms starting Saturday afternoon through Monday, according to Storm Team 4. Areas north and west of New York City face the highest chance of rain, possibly seeing heavy downpours.
There won’t be a total washout, and there will be plenty of dry times as well, especially for areas east of the city on Saturday, Storm Team 4 reports.
Sunday is expected to start out with more scattered showers and storms, with hopefully a few dry breaks during the afternoon. High temperatures for the weekend will be in the low to mid 80s, which is near normal for this time of year.
The wet weather ushers in an end to the oppressive heat that settled over the tri-state for more than a week. Temperatures aren't expected to climb out of the low 80s in the city until at least Wednesday -- and the cooler temperatures, along with the rain, are a welcome respite for many.
Suffolk County on Long Island declared a Stage 1 water alert amid the ongoing heat, and local utilities say they expect record usage — more than 11 billion gallons — this month due to drought. Officials there, and in a dozen counties in northern and central New Jersey, where a drought watch has been issued, are asking residents to conserve water by restricting lawn watering to odd days or the evening hours and fixing leaky faucets, among other measures.
