9 Horses Found Emaciated on Long Island: SPCA

Nine emaciated and sick horses were found on Long Island and a woman was charged with animal abuse, animal welfare advocates said.

The horses were being boarded on Blake Avenue in Bohemia, the Suffolk County SPCA said. Their ribs show through their skin and many have health problems that weren't treated, the SPCA said.

Vanessa Costello, 29, of Nesconset, was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. She is due to appear in court on Aug. 31. It wasn't clear whether she has an attorney.

The horses were moved to a local stable where they are receiving care.

Anyone who witnesses animal cruelty or neglect in Suffolk County is asked to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.
