A police officer on motorcycle patrol was struck and critically injured in a hit and run crash Saturday morning on Long Island, authorities said.

The Nassau County police officer was struck Bellmore Avenue and Davenport Place in Bellmore around 8:30 a.m., police said.

Hussam Rajab, 40, of North Bellmore, was arrested a short time later and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, Nassau County police said. 

The officer was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.

Rajab was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney.
