The rabbi was hospitalized in serious condition with a head injury

A 70-year-old rabbi was hospitalized with a serious head injury after he was hit by a driver on Long Island Monday evening who fled the scene after the accident, authorities say.

County police detectives say Rabbi Jordon Kelemer was crossing the street in front of the Young Israel Jewish Center in West Hempstead around 7:30 p.m. when a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck traveling south on Hempstead Avenue hit him. The truck driver drove off.

A passerby found Kelemer in the street and called authorities.
