Roller Rink Under High Line Opens Next Week

Roller skating aficionados are no longer confined to the skate circle in Central Park: they'll soon be able to bring their wheels to a new outdoor roller skating rink underneath the High Line.

The rink is scheduled to open next Thursday, July 28, and admission will be free for the first 500 people on the first two days of opening, courtesy of Japanese clothing retailer UNIQLO.

The rink will offer theme nights and expand existing public amenities at The Lot, including a rotating series of food trucks and a bar, said the park operator, Friends of the High Line.

The Lot is an 8,000-square feet public space made of white asphalt below the High Line at West 30th Street and 10th Avenue.

And when they're not rolling around the rink, skaters will be able to take a break on the plentiful benches made from the steel used in the original High Line railroad.

The High Line Rink will be open for a limited time this summer between July 28 and Sept. 26 and is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

The installation will be run by Friends of the High Line and United Skates of America. Admission is $10 for kids and $12 for adults. Skate rentals are included in the admission fees.
