Gunfire Erupts Near Long Island Powwow: State Police

Gunfire erupted near a Native American celebration that draws thousands of visitors on Long Island, police say. A man was arrested, and no one was injured.

Troopers heard gunshots around 8 p.m. Saturday while providing security at the Shinnecock Indian Powwow at the tribe's reservation near Southampton, New York state police said. The event is open to the public.

Troopers found a 23-year-old Mastic man fighting with other attendees nearby.

Troopers were told he fired a shot, another man grabbed the gun and another shot was fired as they grappled. The second man fled with the gun.

Devon Trent was arrested on charges including weapon possession and held for arraignment Sunday.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Trent had an attorney.
