Jets to Open New Stadium in Preseason, But Giants Can Come Too

The battle over who will play the first game in the new Meadowlands Stadium is now over.

The preseason schedule is out, and the Jets will be the home team taking on the Giants Monday night August 16 on ESPN. The two teams traditionally play for bragging rights for New York in the third week of the preseason.

Both teams wanted to be the first to take to the field in the new $1.6 billion stadium.

The Giants won a secret coin toss by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to play the first regular season game at the new stadium on September 12. As a consolation prize, the Jets were given the following Monday night game and the preseason opener.

Jets owner Woody Johnson was miffed over the coin flip in Goodell’s office because neither team was represented.

So, the new Meadowlands Stadium will likely be decked out in green on August 16.

But, it could be the best of both worlds for Big Blue.

The team gets to play the first preseason and regular season game at the team's new home.

We wonder what Woody'll have to say about this one.
