Garden State's Unemployment Jumps for 14th Month

New Jersey's unemployment rate is up again. The state Department of Labor and Workforce Development says the jobless rate reached 8.3 percent in March, up from February's rate of 8.2 percent.

New Jersey's rate was lower than the national rate of 8.5 percent. That's a change from February, when the state's jobless figure exceeded the national rate for the first time in two years.

The figures released Wednesday indicate the Garden State lost jobs in March for the 14th straight month, shedding 17,200 positions. Heaviest losses were in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and manufacturing.

The state says construction and education and health services gained a combined 900 jobs.
