A funeral was held Saturday in Queens for a lifeguard credited with saving neighbors on his surfboard the night Sandy struck.
Family and friends gathered at St. Francis de Sales Church in Belle Harbor to honor 23-year-old Dylan Smith. A memorial service was also held Saturday in Rincon, Puerto Rico, where Smith died last week surfing in rough waters while on vacation.
In Rincon, a popular surfing beach, friends and surfers held a paddle-out -- a symbolic memorial service in the ocean to remember a fallen surfer. A memorial plaque, created by a local artist, was placed on the beach near Smith's family home in Rincon.
Smith's body was brought to New York this week. A paddle-out is planned Sunday in Rockaway Beach at 1 p.m.
The night of the storm, Smith helped rescue six people using a homemade rope bridge and his surfboard as fires spread across the flooded Rockaway peninsula. Smith was recently selected as one of People Magazine's Heroes of 2012.
