Former New York City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito threw her support behind Cynthia Nixon on Sunday, calling the gubernatorial candidate a “fighter for communities across New York.”

Mark-Viverito, who currently works as a senior advisor to Latino Victory, officially endorsed Nixon at a press conference in East Harlem, Nixon’s campaign said.

The activist and “Sex and the City” actress aims to unseat Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary on Sept. 13.

“[Nixon has] stood up for LGBTQ equality, women’s rights, and for better schools and more equitable education funding here in New York City and all across the state,” Mark-Viverito said in a statement. “She’s stood arm-in-arm with immigrants and black and brown New Yorkers in every one of those fights.”

“And in these dark times, she’s exactly the kind of progressive fighter New York needs right now,” she added.

In May, Nixon secured an endorsement from the state’s progressive Working Families Party.

“New Yorkers want and deserve better than centrist, corporate Democrats whose entire political careers have been financed by political machines,” Nixon said in her own statement Sunday.
