Flash Flood Watch Issued for Much of Tri-State Ahead of Wet and Windy Storm

A flash flood watch has been issued for Sunday into Monday for New York City, Long Island and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey ahead of a storm system that's expected to bring strong winds and widespread rain to the tri-state.

The National Weather Service issued the flash flood watch from noon Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday. A high wind watch was also issued for much of the region from 6 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday.

Conditions were beautiful Saturday, with 70-degree weather and sunny skies, but they're expected to deteriorate rapidly Sunday as gusty winds and heavy rain form.

The storm moving in Sunday is expected to bring 1-3 inches across the region, with more than 3 inches possible in some places, Storm Team 4 says. (See the full list of weather watches and warnings below.)

The severe weather threat comes five years to the day Sandy made landfall in New Jersey, beginning its days-long siege on the tri-state area.

The heaviest rain is expected between noon Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, according to Storm Team 4. Flash flooding and isolated power outages are possible as the storm rolls through.

The strongest winds are likely between 3 p.m Sunday and noon Monday. Gusts are expected to be more than 50 mph in spots. Storm Team 4 says the windiest areas are expected to be on Long Island, but that gusts of more than 40 mph are likely in the city and Hudson Valley.

Utility company PSE&G said all of its employees and contractors on Long Island are on-hand and ready to respond to any damage the rain and high winds might cause.

The storm moves out Monday morning, though wind gusts will still top 40 mph at times, especially on Long Island, according to Storm Team 4.

Showers may linger a bit through Monday morning, but it's expected to stay gusty for much of the day and temperatures aren't expected to crack the 60-degree mark. The weather improves for Halloween, with partly to mostly sunny skies forecast and a high of 60 degrees, Storm Team 4 says.
