UPDATE: 'What Do We Do Now?': Tenants, Witnesses Recall Horror in Raging Yonkers Fire

More than 100 families were displaced by a relentless fire that tore through an apartment building in Yonkers Tuesday evening, an inferno that raged out of control for hours and choking the entire neighborhood in black smoke, officials say.

Flames and smoke engulfed the six-story building at around 6 p.m. on Parkview Avenue. The fire was still burning by 11:30 p.m. No injuries have been reported, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said. Firefighters were expected to be dosing flames into the Wednesday morning hours.

The fire appeared to be contained to one building and may have started on the top floor, according to Spano.

The fire spread to the cockloft and the wind helped fuel it, making the fight even more treacherous for firefighters.

"Every fireman in this city is fighting this fire," Spano said.

The inferno caused part of the building's roof to collapse.

Neighbors were choking on smoke and one witness said it looked like "an inferno."

"The sky was all lit up," Nancy Herran said. "I can't believe how bad it got so fast."

The area around the building was cordoned off, Yonkers police said.

A spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, which is helping displaced residents, told News 4 that approximately 150 families have been affected by the fire. A temporary shelter was setup at Roosevelt High School.

It's not yet clear what may have sparked the blaze.
