Fire Tears Through Apartment Houses in New Jersey: Officials

Fire gutted apartments in three buildings Saturday in a suburban community in New Jersey, fire officials said.

Firefighters from several departments in Essex County battled the 6 p.m. blaze at the residence on Charles Street in Bloomfield.

As many as 18 apartments were destroyed or damaged. No injuries were reported.

At least six families lost their homes, Mayor Michael Venezia said in a post on his Facebook page. Some of the displaced residents well be staying at the local Civic Center for the night, he said.

The Red Cross was at the scene to offer help to anyone needing emergency shelter.
