What to Know

  • Another woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition
  • Close to 20 people live in the building, and most were back home by Monday night

A man in his 60s was killed in a building fire in Mount Vernon Monday, authorities say.

The fire forced 10 people to flee the building, fire officials said at the scene. A woman was also taken from the scene to Mount Vernon Hospital in critical condition.

Firefighters say they found smoke detectors in the rooming house, but they did not go off. Resident Anthea Devincentis was credited for alerting her neighbors, banging their doors after she returned home and smelled smoke.

Mayor Richard Thomas said that will be part of the investigation, and highlighted the need for proper funding of building inspections.

Just under 20 people live in the building, and most were back home by Monday night.
