2 Struck, Killed on Long Island Highway: Police

Two men were struck and killed by a pickup truck on a Long Island highway when they pulled over to the shoulder to inspect a problem with their vehicle Monday afternoon, state police said.

The men had stopped their car on the side of Meadowbrook State Parkway and were out of their vehicle when the pickup hit them at about 12:30 p.m. The force of the impact flung both victims into the southbound roadway and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene; he was not injured. Police said he was being questioned, and that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The Meadowbrook State Parkway southbound was shut down between the Southern State Parkway and Babylon Turnpike while police investigated. State police said it could be hours before the road would reopen.

The investigation is ongoing.
