A Selden man and his two young children died in a car accident in Hauppauge early Monday morning, Suffolk County Police said.

The bodies of 44-year-old Arthur Reece, his five-year-old stepson, Delano Anderson, and his one-month-old daughter, Larrisa, were pulled from a Jeep that had been fully engulfed in flames, police said. It happened on the eastbound lane of the Long Island Expressway just east of exit 56.

Traffic was closed for five hours between exits 56 and 57 in Hauppauge near Veteran's Highway while police investigated and cleared the roadway.

Police said passers-by, including a trucker and an off-duty New York City police officer, who came upon the burning Jeep tried to help but were unable to rescue the occupants.
