Ex-NYPD Detective Sentenced Six Years for Burglary Ring

An ex-NYPD detective has been sentenced to six years for his role in a burglary ring.

U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bianco also ordered former Det. Rafael Astacio to forfeit $200,000 during a Thursday hearing on Long Island.

In June 2014 Astacio pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property and filing a fraudulent tax return.

His attorney says the 43-year-old has taken full responsibility for the crimes. Peter Brill says his client hopes one day to rebuild his life.

Federal prosecutors charge Astacio personally participated in six of nearly four dozen burglaries between 2010 and 2012 that netted the crew $8 million.

They say Astacio and four others used blow torches, crowbars, wire cutters and sledgehammers to break into businesses.
