Former Long Island Politician Arrested After Stealing Ex-Girlfriend's Louis Vuitton Pocketbook: Police

A former Democratic lawmaker from Long Island who once ran for Congress has been arrested on charges he stole a bracelet and pocketbook from his ex-girlfriend.

David Mejias was arraigned Friday in Nassau County District Court on charges of grand larceny and possession of stolen property. He pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $2,500.

A judge also ordered Mejias to stay away from the ex-girlfriend.

Newsday says Mejias is accused of entering the woman's East Garden City home on Thursday without permission. He allegedly took a $3,000 Louis Vuitton pocketbook and $800 bracelet.

Mejias' attorney, Oscar Michelen, said there was no allegation of violence. He declined further comment.

Mejias, who served as a Nassau legislator from 2003 to 2009, lost a 2006 congressional race.

He was also arrested in 2010 for stalking a then-ex girlfriend. It's not clear if the victim in that case is the same woman.

The 2010 case was ultimately dismissed.
