An elderly woman died and a man is fighting for his life after a fire raged through their Manhattan apartment on Monday, officials say.
Just after 7 p.m., the firefighters were called to a La Salle Street building in Morningside Heights, where they found a blaze inside an apartment on the 15th floor, authorities said.
The FDNY made their way inside and found an 88-year-old woman inside. She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, the NYPD said.
Firefighters also removed an 86-year-old man from inside the building. He was taken to an area hospital, where he is in critical condition, officials said.
It wasn’t immediately clear what sparked the blaze, but authorities are investigating.
The names of the victims were not made public.
