Economy Eats Girl Scout Cookie Sales

Some troops report sales are down by half

State Girl Scout officials say that the bad economy has been nibbling away at cookie sales this year.

One troop in eastern Connecticut says that sales are down about half what they were last year, another reports a 35 percent drop.

The Girl Scout cookie sale is divided into two parts: the pre-order sale from Dec. 20 to Jan. 23 and the booth sale, which started Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Connecticut says the organization is not immune from the slowing economy.

Sharon Bellinger says the state organization lowered its cookie selling goal by 8 percent this year because of the poor economy. The goal has been cut from 2.8 million boxes to 2.6 million boxes.

Cookie profits fund service projects, trips and day-to-day operations of the troops.
