Passenger Spots Drone Near Plane at LaGuardia: FAA

The FAA says it's investigating a plane passenger's report of a drone flying near an American Airlines plane as it was landing at LaGuardia Airport Tuesday afternoon.

American Airlines Flight 4125 -- flown on an Embraer E145 plane -- was approaching to land on Runway 22 at LaGuardia in Queens at about 4:30 p.m. when the passenger spotted a drone and alerted the crew, an FAA spokeswoman said.

The plane landed safely.

Drone hobbyists and commercial operators who have received permission to fly drones are supposed to stay 5 miles away from an airport and fly no higher than 400 feet. But FAA officials have said they receive multiple reports daily of drones flying in the area of airports and manned aircraft, and most of the flights appear to be unauthorized.

Violators could face fines of up to $25,000 and criminal charges.
