A New York City man is facing charges after authorities said he mercilessly beat his dog, held it by the neck in front of a young girl and then dumped its body in the garbage.
George Reed, 37, is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, torturing an animal and endangering the welfare of a child after he allegedly killed the pet at his apartment in the Bronx's Belmont neighborhood on Aug. 16, according to the Bronx DA's office.
"The defendant was cruel and relentless in his incomprehensible attack on a small, defenseless animal," said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. "Surveillance video captured this horror and we will now work hard to obtain justice; we emphasize our continued dedication to protecting vulnerable animals."
Prosecutors alleged that Reed punched and kicked his dog and slammed the animal to the ground. At one point, they allege a girl saw him clutching the pet by the neck and punching it.
Later, prosecutors said Reed was caught on surveillance cameras carrying a trash bag out to the garbage; someone saw the dog's lifeless body in the garbage bin later that night.
Reed was indicted in the attack on Thursday. He's being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately available.
