Doctor Accused of Addicting Patients to Painkillers: Indictment

Federal authorities have accused a western New York doctor of making his patients dependent on drugs.

Eugene Gosy was responsible for the mass distribution of prescription painkillers for profit, U.S. Attorney William Hochul said Tuesday after filing a 114-count indictment against the physician.

Gosy is expected to appear in federal court on Wednesday to face drug, fraud and conspiracy charges.

There was no answer at his office Tuesday and a phone message left at his Clarence home wasn't immediately returned.

For the past 10 years, the pain management doctor illegally prescribed addictive controlled substances in return for payments from patients and insurance companies, investigators said. Authorities said it was obvious in some cases that patients were abusing the medication.
