Dead Dolphin Washes Up on Fire Island

The 8-foot dolphin washed up about 1 p.m. Thursday.

The carcass of a bottlenose dolphin has washed up at Smith Point Park on Fire Island.

The 8-foot dolphin washed up about 1 p.m. Thursday. Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation director Richard DiGiovanni says it had been dead for 48 hours and was "badly scavenged."
 
Newsday reports that a necropsy is to be performed to determine what caused the death.
