New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo maintains a strong lead over challenger Cynthia Nixon in a Democratic primary by more than 35 points, a recent poll reveals.

The latest Quinnipiac University Poll released Wednesday has Cuomo leading with the support of 59 percent of registered Democrats, while Nixon, an activist best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes on the television series Sex and the City, has 23 percent.

The latest poll sees an increase in support for Cuomo, compared to that for Nixon, as the May 2 survey had Cuomo leading 50 percent to Nixon’s 28 percent.

Additionally, the poll reveals that Cuomo leads among all genders, education, age, racial and regional groups, with Cuomo leading 58-20 percent among Democratic women, 60-28 percent among men, 53-2+8 percent among white Democrats and 65-18 among non-white Democrats.

Nixon’s spokeswoman Lauren Hitt released a statement on the latest Quinnipiac Poll saying the poll is a poor reflection of the electorate likely to vote Sept. 13, giving as an example that only 55 percent of the registered Democrats polled knew who Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was and that she ended up winning the elections to become a representative of New York’s 15th congressional district.

“Polls of registered voters clearly aren’t capturing the kind of Democrats who have been turning out to vote in primaries -- the most motivated, most progressive part of the base,” Hitt said.

The poll also shows Cuomo leading Republican candidate Marc Molinaro 57 percent to 31 percent.

The poll was conducted July 12-16 and has a margin of error of +/-4.1 percentage points.
