Five family members and another person stole more than $1.4 million from a widow who was under the family's care, according to an indictment handed up Thursday.

Authorities said the victim's 90-year-old sister and the sister's son assumed power of attorney for the victim after her husband died in November 2012. That came about due to the victim's diminished mental capacities," Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said.

The victim's sister, Concetta Amato, of Freehold, and nephew, Vincent Amato, 57, of Middletown, conspired with the nephew's business partner, Lorrie Martin, 55, of Matawan to defraud the victim, Gramiccioni said. Three other relatives - Maria Sanzillo, 59, and Peter Sanzillo, 72, both of Staten Island, and Alia Alquran, 31, of Florida, were also in on the scheme, Gramiccioni alleged.

The scheme was operated from September 2013 to July 2017, Gramiccioni said, but further details about it were not disclosed.

Each defendant faces three counts of theft and single counts of conspiracy to commit theft. It's not known if any of the defendants have retained attorneys.
