Correction Officer Arrested in Brownstone Fire That Hurt 11

Firefighters were on scene within minutes after getting the call Thursday morning, officials say

A 43-year-old city correction officer has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire that consumed two floors of a brownstone in Brooklyn Thursday morning, critically injuring four people.

Two people suffered serious injuries and another five received treatment for minor injuries after the blaze at the three-story brownstone on Chauncey Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant. A pet cat was also treated with oxygen after surviving the fire.

Yvette Randolph was charged early Friday with second-degree arson. Information on an attorney for her wasn't immediately available.

The Department of Correction tells NBC 4 New York Randolph has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. She's worked in the prison word at Bellevue Hospital since 2002 and has no record of any formal disciplinary actions.

Police haven't said anything about Randolph's motive, but several neighbors reported seeing a suspicious woman around the building recently who they say had some kind of confrontation with a man who used to live on the second floor.

Neighbor Sujeny Lamberty said her 4-year-old godson and his 13-year-old sister lived in the buidling and were both in the ICU after the fire.

"She needs to go down, she needs to pay for what she did," she said of Randolph.
