NYPD Crew Rescues Man Who Fell 3 Stories on Cargo Ship

The NYPD said officers flew more than 15 miles off the coast of New York Thursday to rescue a man who was badly injured in a fall on a container ship.

The man is expected to survive after police with the department's aviation unit flew a chopper 16 miles south of Breezy Point, Queens, to save the man who fell more than three stories onto the deck of a a 600-foot vessel on Thursday afternoon.

The man went into cardiac arrest after the fall, and NYPD officers were lowered onto the massive boat's deck with a stretcher to save the man.

They then flew the man back to dry land, and he was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in stable condition.

The sort of rescue has become part of the unit's duties of late: it's at least the second time this year that NYPD helicopters have gone to sea to save maritime workers.
