Girl Dies, Boy Injured After Falling Out of, Getting Struck by Moving Car in New Rochelle: Police, Relatives

A 10-year-old girl has died and a boy was injured after they fell out of a moving vehicle in Westchester and were struck by the car, driven by the girl's mother, according to police and relatives.

Witnesses said a mother was driving a SUV filled with children out of a driveway in New Rochelle when two of the kids somehow fell out the back seat and were run over.

One of those children was the woman's 10-year-old daughter; the other was a 12-year-old boy who was friends with the family, relatives told NBC 4 New York.

The girl's sister, who was also in the car as it was pulling out of the parking lot of their Drake Avenue home, said her mother shifted to the wrong gear and didn't realize the door was open.

Both children were taken to the hospital, where the girl was initially listed in critical condition and the other was listed in serious but stable condition, according to New Rochelle police.

The girl was later pronounced dead.

Neighbor Marisol Valencia said the mother of the girl often babysat her own children and she couldn't imagine the pain the grieving mother must now endure.

"She's a very good mother," she said. "I have to pray for her, for both the kids."

Investigators say so far it appears to be a tragic accident.

A similar incident happened in Stamford, Conn. Tuesday, when a station wagon rolled over a 3-year-old girl as her mother was unloading groceries from the vehicle. It's not clear if the vehicle malfunctioned or the mother forgot to put the car in park.
