Child Left Alone in Parked Car While Mom Smoked Pot: Cops

Police say mom was inside her home smoking marijuana at the time

A Suffolk County woman has been arrested after police found her one year old son alone in her car while she was in her home smoking marijuana, officials said.

Suffolk County Police responded to a home on Seymour Drive, in Shirley, after a 911 call reported a child was left alone in a car for almost an hour. Police found the one year old boy unharmed in the backseat of a 2010 Nissan Altima parked near the home.

Officials said the child's mom, Karen Edelmann, 43, had left the boy in the car and went into her home to smoke marijuana.

Edelmann has been charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Resisting Arrest. She will be arraigned on these charges Tuesday in Central Islip.

The little boy was released to his father.

Child Protective Services were notified of the incident, authorities said.
