Officials say a teenager has thrown his mother's cat to its death from a 14th-story window.
SPCA official Ken Ross says the suspect, 18-year-old Shaman Irvin of Yonkers, told officers he "hates cats."
Ross says Irvin told them that the cat, an non-neutered male, angered him by spraying as Irvin tried to clean the apartment.
The chief says a building worker in the lobby reported that after the cat hit the ground "it took a couple of steps and then collapsed and died." He says a tip led SPCA officers to Irvin.
Irvin was awaiting arraignment Monday on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals. No lawyer had been appointed.
Ross is police chief for the Westchester County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
