Car Plunges Off Elevated Expressway in Bronx

A car plunged from an elevated expressway in the Bronx Monday after hitting a patch of ice, injuring two people, police say.

The car, a Toyota Matrix, lost traction on the Bruckner Expressway in the Unionport area Monday afternoon and flew off the side of the elevated road, investigators say.

The car landed upright on the road below, but sustained heavy damage. Debris spattered the roadway where the car landed, and police say items in the car's trunk flew out midair and hit another vehicle on a service nearby service.

The car's driver and passenger both had injuries, police say; one was seriously hurt. The other vehicle's driver was uninjured.
