Fleeing Driver Plunges into Gowanus Canal: NYPD

A driver fleeing a hit-and-run in Brooklyn wound up plunging his car into the Gowanus Canal before cops caught up with him and took him into custody Monday, police say.

The 36-year-old driver ran over the foot of a 41-year-old woman with her toddler at Court and DeGraw streets in Cobble Hill at about 11 a.m., according to police.

He fled in his Audi, continuing on DeGraw Street before crashing into the Gowanus Canal, police said.

He managed to get out of the car and was taken into custody by responding officers.

Charges were pending.

The mother was taken to Methodist Hospital and is expected to be OK. Her child wasn't hurt.

A truck later fished the car out of the water.
