Police said a 34-year-old Queens man went on a shooting rampage Friday night, gunning down his girlfriend's son and then shooting two people on a bus just before the evening rush hour, killing one.
Authorities identified the shooter as Damel Burton and said he will be charged with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and assault. Sources say he appeared to believe people were following and watching him.
Around 4 p.m. the gunman boarded a Q111 bus along Archer Avenue in Jamaica and shot two people standing in the aisle, police and witnesses said.
Marvin Gilkes, 36, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead on arrival at Jamaica Hospital. The other, a 29-year-old man shot in the face, is in stable condition.
"It was basically chaos," said witness Charlton Scribner. "People were running away from the shots."
Twenty minutes earlier and a mile away at the Baisley Park Houses, Burton is believed to have shot his girlfriend's 18-year-old son in the chest. The teenager, identified by police as Keith Murrell, then jumped out of the apartment's second-floor window to escape.
"He was a regular kid," said Ali Noori, a friend. "It's sad this had to happen."
