Broken-Down School Bus Catches Fire on Long Island: Police

All the students who were aboard the bus in Merrick were already at school before the fire, authorities said

A school bus that had broken down burst into flames on Long Island on Wednesday morning, authorities say. No children were present during the fire. 

The bus was traveling on Merrick and Kirkwood avenues in Merrick at about 7:40 a.m. when it broke down, according to Nassau County police.

The bus driver got all of the students off of the disabled vehicle and another bus came and picked them up.

All of the students were at school when the bus's engine compartment caught fire, authorities said.

Video from the scene shows intense flames shooting out of the bus and a thick plume of black smoke wafting into the sky.

No one was injured.
