Man Convicted of Raping Woman Using Walker Is Sentenced to Prison

Sources say the suspect also stole about $250 from the woman

A man convicted of following a woman on a walker into her Bronx home and raping her has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Unga Smith, 41, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape on Jan. 24, and was sentenced Monday to 14 years in prison and 20 years post-release supervision in Bronx Supreme Court.

Prosecutors said surveillance video showed Smith following a 64-year-old woman using a walker into her building in Norwood on Jan. 8, 2018. He then broke into her apartment, dragged her into her bedroom and raped her, prosecutors said, claiming he had a gun and threatening to kill her.

Smith was living in the Bronx Psychiatric Center at the time.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said in a statement, "The defendant forced himself into the victim’s apartment and raped her while threatening to kill her. Today’s sentence keeps a dangerous sexual predator off our streets."
