Families are returning to Breezy Point to celebrate the holiday weekend even as the Sandy-ravaged community continues to rebuild.
Damaged, tarp-covered structures and unfinished construction jobs are still a common sight seven months after the storm.
Despite the chilly weather Saturday, Donna Cann and others who have vacationed in the Queens community for years were reuniting at the Breezy Point Surf Club.
"We've been coming down here every summer since I was a kid," said Cann. "My kids come down here. It's great."
The club is still in the process of replacing carpets and painting walls.
"I don't live here year-round but you can't abandon the people you're with all the time," said Cann.
Others who had returned for the Memorial Day weekend said they were confident the rebuilding efforts would be successful.
"This area was hard hit and they are strong," said Erin Monahan. "They're 'Breezy Strong.' They will rebuild and will be back and hopefully it won't take too long."
