Correction department officials say at least eight officers have been hurt in a brawl at a New York City jail.
Officials say the fight broke out Sunday morning at the Manhattan Detention Complex.
An internal corrections department report says inmate Joseph Cannon hit Assistant Deputy Warden Arthur Ruggiero in the head in an unprovoked attack, according to the Daily News. Records shown Ruggiero remained on duty while several other officers were hospitalized.
Department officials say seven other officers were taken to a hospital for pepper spray exposure.
WPIX-TV reports the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association says the inmate is "one of the thousands of mentally ill inmates" in the city's jail system.
Cannon is awaiting trial on robbery and other charges. It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.
