Boy, 3, Grazed by Bullet in Bronx Park: FDNY

The boy and another man were both hit by bullets Friday afternoon near Bronx Park

A man was shot in the leg and a 3-year-old boy grazed in the arm when a gunman fired shots inside a Bronx park Friday evening, authorities say.

The FDNY says it was called to Vidalia Park at East 180th Street and Daly Avenue at about 5:50 p.m. for two gunshot victims. When they arrived, responders found a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg and a young boy with a wound on his arm.

South Bronx resident Sabrina Mendez was inside the park when she heard three gunshots. She initially thought they were firecrackers but then saw the gun smoke.

"Everybody ran," she said. "People started yelling, screaming, looking for their kids, calling their kids."

Both of the victims were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital. The injuries are not life-threatening, officials say.

The suspected shooter, a 27-year-old man, is in custody, police said. A motive was not immediately clear.

Mendez said the shooting was a reminder that violence is not uncommon in the area.

"Honestly, living in the south Bronx, you get used to it," she said. "It's like a regular day, to be honest."
