Big Big Bling up for Bids

Christies to auction off a multi-million dollar diamond

Talk about a pricey piece of the rock!  A 39-carat pear-shaped diamond called the Evening Star is going on the auction block in New York City

Its pre-sale estimate is $3.6 million to $5.5 million.

The huge rock comes from the same ancient mine in India as the celebrated Hope and Wittelsbach diamonds, known for their luminescent quality.

The Evening Star is one of 10 diamonds belonging to a single owner that Christie's is offering in a special sale on Dec. 10.  Christies is not identifying the collector.

The sale comes weeks after Christie's sold a 32.01-carat emerald-cut diamond belonging to billionaire philanthropist Leonore Annenberg for $7.7 million.

And if you're wondering which diamond brought in the biggest bid in jewelry history, Christie's says the Wittelsbach diamond holds the record, selling for $24.3 million at 2008 sale in London.
