Eleven Injured in 3-Vehicle Crash on Belt Parkway

The crash happened around 6:15 a.m. near Bay Parkway-Exit 5

Eleven people were injured in a three-vehicle accident on the Belt Parkway Tuesday after a speeding driver tried to make a U-turn in traffic.

A law enforcement official tells NBC 4 New York that the driver was clocked doing 86 mph in a 50 mph zone. A police officer on patrol doing speed checks saw him then make an illegal U-turn into traffic moments before the crash at about 6:15 a.m. near Bay Parkway-Exit 5.

Two victims were in critical condition, while the rest had minor injuries, authorities said. All were taken to Coney Island and Lutheran hospitals.

All lanes of the parkway were shut down for more than an hour after the accident, causing a rush-hour traffic jam. The accident has since been cleared, and all lanes re-opened.

The driver was charged with reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operation and speed violation.
