New Jersey has the third best beach water quality in the country, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council's annual report, but many of the state's beaches still suffer from contamination that can make people sick, such as human and animal waste.
The Natural Resources Defense Council found that 13 percent of the 216 beaches where the organization was able to get statistically significant water quality samples had levels of bacteria higher than the recommended safety threshold.
The 10 worst beaches in the state for water pollution last year are:

2. Shark River Beach and Yacht Club, Neptune Township
3. Avon Road, Pine Beach
4. Windward Beach, Brick
